Ever experienced a mid-afternoon anxiety crisis?
Or a down-in-the-dumps day in your career where your self-doubt drowns out the self-confidence you’ve been working so hard to cultivate?
You might think it’s your self-talk or your failure to execute or maybe the family you grew up in.
And yes, part of anxiety and depression is genetics and the events that have happened in your life, but more and more, in the medical world, we’re realizing that it’s less about your parents or how stressful your work is…
More and more, mental health is coming back to how healthy the rest of your body is. In fact, it may be the single biggest factor.
Because there’s an elephant in the room that no one is talking about when we talk about mental health.Because there’s an elephant in the room that no one is talking about when we talk about mental health. Click To Tweet
And it’s your microbiome.
Oh, my dear… read on because I’m pulling back the curtains on a absolutely critical piece of your health- mental and physical–you simply can’t ignore if you want more calm, clarity, and confidence in your life.
I’m so glad you asked! (It’s one of my fa-a-avorite topics!)
Forewarning: this might make you a little squeamish at first…
Your microbiome is a huge collection of bacteria and other microbes (like fungi, viruses, etc.) that live in and on you… kind of like mini cities made up of bacteria colonizing all parts of you.
Your skin is covered in them, your colon is stuffed with them, and they loooove hanging out in all the other nooks and crannies– mouths, vaginas, hair… anywhere you go, they go too.
Shocking stat: science estimates that if you look at all the cells in your body, only 43-50% of them are human!
The rest? Bacteria. You read that right… You might just be outnumbered. They live alongside and inside you, either helping or hurting your mental health.
Now before you click away, most of these little guys are critical to creating stable, happy moods and being the most productive creative you can be, so it miiiight be a good idea to figure out how to take care of them.
Well, whenever you eat, there’s a huge montropolis of bacteria that populate your large intestine (colon), & they love to eat parts of foods that you can’t break down on your own.
And when they do, they create little proteins, each of which carries a distinct message.
Those proteins are like little letters that carry the message through blood stream to all throughout your body, influencing TONS of different things- your immune system, weight, moods, and more. When cells get the letter, they read it and change what they’re doing based on the message inside.
And of course, your precious brain get notes sent to it, too.
When your brain receives these signals, it decides which neurotransmitters (brain chemicals) to make… which can either make you feel motivated and alert OR miserable, anxious, and moody.
Yep, that’s right… the bacteria in your colon right now are partially responsible for what you’re thinking, feeling, eating, doing…
There’s quite a few factors when it comes to having a healthy microbiome, but here’s the top 3 to think about:
If these three factors are off, you might know your microbiome is struggling for many, many reasons, including:
Let’s also not forget the biggies that so many driven, creative women face– mental health issues:
Before you waltz away feeling mired in doom & gloom, I want to hand you some hope… you can dramatically change your microbiome in as little as a day.
(Unfortunately, that also means it changes after just one day of sub-par self-care, but let’s stay with the Pollyana’s positivity, k?)
This week to set a timer and sit for no longer than an hour at a time. Even if you only get up and stretch for 2 minutes after focusing for an hour, it can boost your microbiome, making you happier and more focused when you sit back down!
As I always say, willpower doesn’t always win.
Tiny tweaks are the way to build better health and happiness, on brick at a time.
